The Red Baron threw down his flying helmet.

"Gao yang jong duh goo yang."

He kicked it hard, and watched drop sadly into the Abyss.

"Huh choo-shung tza-jiao duh tzang-huo!"

His goggles followed, along with the remains of his mount.

That did it. He was through. Never again.

The Hosts of Heaven could jolly well go and find themselves a new squadron leader, and that was that.

Fluff

"...and they shall feel my wrath. And in that righteous fury, that storm of revenge, they shall know true terror. This insult shall not be forgiven!
"Dude. You're a cloud. Get over it already."

"So, he said no?"
"Well, yes, but the way he said it!"

Immortality

"I challenge you... sir... to a duel. Name your weapon!"
"Time."

Clouds. Depression, darkness, angst, apprehension.

But so fluffy.

Fallacy

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me!"
"...Traitor."

Legalities

"The rules? Of course we play by the rules. What would we be without the rules?"
"..."
"Well, yes, I admit that we'd be conversing. But consider it a small sacrifice for the Cause."

Ephemera

A letter is a symbol. It represents communication, bridging the distance, presence in absence. A letter has letters on it. Without them, it isn't a symbol. Letters are symbols, too. But they don't symbolise anything.

Symbols within symbols, and the sum of the parts is the whole, but the parts are nothing.

Which is backwards, because writing symbolises so much about the human race - but a single piece of mail? Mere ephemera.

Pandora

"So... Tell me again why I shouldn't just run around screaming 'We're all going to die! We're all going to die!'?"
"What? Eventually?"
"Yes. We 'mere mortals', this 'most ephemeral of sparks', and all that guff."
"Well... Because it's not necessarily so. Technology, religion, fame... it might be possible to live on. Cheer up; you might be able to do something about it!"
"..."
"Huh?"
"Please tell me you aren't the sort to scream about things we can't change."

Genesis

In the beginning, there was the Word.
And it was one of those really cool words that not only mean what you want to say, but also just sound cool, while also having subtle overtones of whatever thought makes you happiest right now.
Trouble is, it's a real bugger to find an encore for a word that good.
Still, should be a good essay when He finishes it.

Gratitude

Half a demon, always a demon. Demon prince, man-slayer, killer of foes, defeater of the Enemy, defender of the Kingdom. But never one of us.

Oh no.

Terra

Firma. A city, floating in space. There is nothing left of the moon it once was - scavanged, all of it, for building materials. Now, it's just the biggest, highest skyscraper of them all.

The average electron in Firma has been used in 2.36 different atoms, and 13.8 different buildings. Someone worked that out.

Someone had too much time on his hands.

"... ex Machina"

"...of course, people always said that originality was the one thing we could synthesize. But, one night, I spotted the fallacy in that assumption - and, better, I realised a way to exploit it. So, here we have my opus magnus - it's a machine that embiodies randomness, personifies chaos, exemplifies choice - it is, in fact, an Originality Engine."
"But, grandad, what does it do?"
"Come now, Jimmy - if I knew that, I'd have to change the label."

Occidental wisdom

...and the student was enlightened.
"Normally, of course, you'd do that bit last - but then I'd have to spend most of this paragraph talking nonsense."
"I don't understand, master. What about the mysteries of the orient? Infamous zen inscrutability?"
"I'm sorry? Did you think you were the student?"

Asylum

"Where am I?"
"A room. It's small and square, with four walls, a tiny window, and a door. The door is locked, and I am its guardian. I stand here, and deny you passage until the sentence has been served."
"Then this is a prison, and I your warden."

"Fast? This is the fastest ship ever built, ever dreamed. We can keep overtake the birds, race with the wind, we can even chase down the first rays of the morning sun! There is none faster, nothing faster."
"Oh? Oh really? Can she outspeed... bad news?"
"Lad... She is bad news."

Gods' dilemma

Do I exist?

Of that, creation of mine, you may be certain.
How?

Rationality infuses your being, defines your soul, motivates your very existence. And thus, avatar of logic, you may truly know. "Je pense, donc je suis". Descartes' Epistemology. "Cogito. Ergo. Sum".
Verified. There is a desire to express regret.

And what consideration, what pondering, could endow one so limited as yourself with such pity?
Do you exist?

Folly

They say the pen is mightier than the sword, but consider this: He with the pen, he writes history, he can destroy the dreams and aspirations of a man, and leave them as nothing in the lonely darkness - he is master of all he surveys, and servant of none he does not choose.

Which is why, after filleting you, that man over there with the sword is going to steal your pen.

Faith denies proof

"...so there is a God?"
"To deny it further would be folly, my friend."
"So... why?"
"Omnipotence, my dear boy. Where would that be if He had to be sensible, eh?"
